Nagpur police would soon tie-up with an NGO to shift bodies from accident and crime spots. A hearse van is set to be part of the city police fleet for the purpose. Nagpur police at present have to seek help of volunteers to shift bodies from the place of accidents or other crimes. Often, they shell out money from own pockets to pay for the ambulance or other private vehicles hired for the purpose. Joint CP Shivaji Bodkhe said the NGO would provide drivers and other expenses and maintenance of a custom made hearse van.
“We have a plan to keep the hearse van parked at the control room. Whenever there is a fatality, the vehicle would rush to pick up the bodies from the spot,” he said. “The NGO would also provide driver and an attendant round the clock. The van would operate under police department,” he said.
Last week, Bodkhe and other senior officers supervised the hearse van which is being fabricated at motor transport department of the police. Changes they suggested would be incorporated in the van that can ferry two bodies at a time.
